Round 4 didn’t produce as many goals as the opening three rounds but there were still some star performances that were worth noting!
Ntokozo Mandela (UP-TUKS)
Mandela was influential in Tuks’ attacks, playing as a lone striker as Tuks weren’t in control of the match.
With his positional awareness and good ball control, he managed to create chances out of nothing, but he was denied by the upright in the first half.
He went on to assist Ofentse Mashiane for the first goal and scored the second goal in the second half of added time.
Matthew Welgemoed (Wits):
The defender impressed in the 0-0 draw between Wits University and Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) and we got his captain to explain why he was the best player on the pitch on the evening.
“Matthew played a very crucial role both in attack and defence, where he stood his ground and held his own when TUT threw everything at us, and in attack, his long throw-ins created many opportunities for us to get a goal,” Kal Laing said after the game.
Welgemoed showed real courage and displayed his extreme fitness too, as he was constantly switching from defence to attack throughout.
Luzuko Jevuka (NWU):
A string of good saves by goalkeeper Jevuka saved NWU eagles in their game against UKZN – with several attacks orchestrated by the visitors in the second half of the game.
UKZN who have shown major improvements this season will be left ruing the performance of the stopper as they left Mafikeng with nothing to show for their inspired display.
Ntokozo Mathobela (UJ):
UJ right-back, Mathobela had an impressive debut showing several impressive touches as the hosts pressed on for an opening goal of the night, although it never came.
Mathobela showed true attributes of a modern full-back and was heavily involved in their offensive movements, producing several crosses and starting attacks from his right flank.
As well as helping UJ going forward, he showed composure on the ball and was solid with his defensive responsibilities. While star playmaker Thulani Zanamdela had another top performance, Mathobela was another clear shining light in the squad.
