|Former champions UWC broke their duck and earned their first win of the 2018 season, but hammering seven goals past UL in a 7-0 victory on Thursday night in Bellville.
After three consecutive losses, the home side had to step up and the conditions were suitable for the home side. It took only 15 minutes for UWC to stamp their authority on the match. The wet conditions were not playing into UL’s favour as the side battled to find their rhythm. UWC almost took the lead after Makhubalo took a shot but it went wide of Thoka’s goalpost.
With the wet conditions tough tackles were bound to happen as players were slipping but cautions were shown.
The Salie Adams-coached side kept knocking for that opening goal and were duly rewarded when Phiwokuhle Mphalala finished off a beautiful cross from Stefan Stuurman to make the score 1-0 to the home side. The visitors were still licking their wounds after that goal when Mphalala was on hand again to finish off another Stefan assist, taking it to 2-0 before the interval.
The second half started off on a high note just 30 seconds in as Xolisa Makhubalo found the back of the net. The rain was pouring and so the goals – Lwando Ngqwemla made it 4-0.
UWC played like a side determined to achieve more and the chances were coming thick and fast. Mphalala got his third for the game to make the score 5-0. UL looked out of their depth and they could not match UWC pound for pound. Peterson scored his first goal for UWC on his first start.
Makhubalo could have made it seven but could not find the back of the net with only the keeper to beat. Peterson would eventually score his second of the game with a header making it 7-0 as UWC rounded off a fine display of football at the Operation Room.
