UJ have ended the round-robin stage on top of the Varsity Football standings after a 1-1 draw to UL in Johannesburg on Monday night.
Limpopo started positively, attacking their hosts with some good passing and running off the ball.
The first 15 minutes saw a few heated tackles in midfield as both teams battled to assert themselves.
UJ had the first shot at goal but stopper Harold Ndhlovu was at hand to prevent UL from conceding an early goal.
UJ defender Matthew Edwards then went down injured after an aerial clash and medics were called onto the field. Edwards soldiered on though and the hosts breathed a sigh of relief.
The home team looked the most likely team to score after turning the tide with another shot on goal, this time the ball kept out by the top of the bar.
A heated first-half ended at 0-0 with goalkeepers Trent Harrison and Harold Ndhlovu the heroes after the first 45 minutes.
UL came into the second half confident and gave UJ a hard time at the back as they attacked goalkeeper Harrison, who needed medical treatment after clashing into a player while making a save.
Ndhlovu was then forced into action on the other end, flicking the ball wide of goal as UL attacked to score.
The visitors piled on the pressure though and were eventually rewarded when Clyde Kgatla score from a free-kick, beating Harrison with a swerving shot to find the back of the net for Limpopo.
UJ hit back soon after though, when an attack on UL’s goal resulted in a scramble which saw Taelo Mphahlele turn the ball into his net to make the score 1-1.
The score remained the same as both teams looked for the winner, but the match ended 1-1 for UJ to end on top of the standings.
