NWU Eagles coach Karabo Masehela is confident that his team will bounce back from their third-round loss to the University of Pretoria (UP-Tuks) in the Varsity Football tournament when his side will face the University of KwaZulu-Natal this week.
Masehela admitted their 2-1 loss to Tuks was a bitter pill to swallow, in particular after they conceded in injury time.
“We had not anticipated such an outcome, but it served as a wake-up call for us. It shows that we cannot relax,” he told Varsity Football.
“To be honest, the game versus Tuks was more of a grudge match given our history with them. We assumed we’d finish them after equalising, but the outcomes never went our way, so it’s a bitter pill to chew.”
While NWU may have lost their previous game against UP, Coach Masehela is optimistic that they can put that defeat behind them and move forward, displaying the form that they did in their first two games of the Varsity Football season.
“We anticipate a difficult battle against UKZN. They will come at us since they have no victories thus far in the tournament, but we will slay them at our fortress,” he added.
“We defeated them 4-1 last year, but we’re not getting carried away by the results. This year is a whole different ball game. My boys are hungrier to win all of our home games.”
After three games, the NWU Eagles are in second place with six points, one point behind log leaders, TUT.
The game between NWU and UKZN will kick off at 17:00 at the Mafikeng Stadium on Thursday and will be broadcast live on SuperSport 4.
