University of Limpopo coach Burney Mampshika was happy with his team’s 1-1 draw with UWC in Belville on Monday night.
He said that although a win would have been great, a draw will have to do for the visitors.
“I am happy that the players stuck to the game plan, even when they scored first we didn’t give up. I am proud of the players,” he said.
He said that the draw is one of the strongest indications that the team might learnt from previous errors.
“I spoke to the players about the long balls at training last week, I think we rectified or managed that in last night’s match. I think the players also communicated amongst themselves on the field which might have made the biggest difference,” he said.
He said that the wind in Bellville played a role, but then they managed to contain themselves.
He said that although they did not convert the chances they created as a team, they will look at the positives of last night’s game.
“We must applaud our defence and goalkeeper, they did a sterling job, they managed to contain their strikers. Actually, the whole team played well. That is the beginning of better things to come,” he concluded.
He said that players who picked up any knocks and injuries will be assessed during training this week.
The Men from the North came from behind to score the goal that levelled matters, thanks to winger Theo Phophi. Blondy Mohale took home FNB man of the match, which carries a R2000 cash prize.
He said that they will take the draw and look to build on it moving forward in the tournament.
He said that he remains hopeful of getting a win in Port Elizabeth next Monday against NMMU.
