Walter Sisulu University may be in their debut Varsity Football season but will be looking to make a lasting impression and have vowed not be pushovers.
WSU will join NMMU-Madibaz as the Eastern Cape sides in the competition and believes their brand of football will spring a surprise or two as they look to bring something new to the party.
“We know we are one of the new teams but we will definitely not be walkovers. We are here to compete and surprise people along the way,” head coach Alfred Khunou told varsitysportssa.com.
The Eastern Cape University will be playing their home games at the Mthatha Campus and boasts an experienced squad – with about 40 percent of their players playing in the ABC Motsepe League.
Khunou believes the mystery of their opponents not knowing them adds to the excitement of the competition.
“We do not them [the other teams] but similarly, they do not know us. So that is going to make it a very interesting competition. Maybe the only team who knows a little about us is NMMU because we play against them in the USSA event. The spectators must keep their eyes on us though because we will be bringing something new and different to the tournament,” he added.
Part of that something different is a brand of football that is unique to WSU and a game plan that can be adapted when the need arises and providing the Mthatha community with something to be proud of.
“We are happy that we can bring exciting football back to Mthatha. We know the stadium will be packed when we play at home and they will create a unique atmosphere because the people of the area have not been able to watch a National event since Bush Bucks moved,” he stated.
