Walter Sisulu University will be fully focused on their own game plan and style of play ahead of their first ever Varsity Football match on Monday.
Their opponents, North West University Pukke, will also be making their debut in the showpiece event and the teams know very little about each other which could make for a cagey affair.
“Pukke are completely unknown to us. We do not know how they play or if they have any individuals they rely on, nothing.
“It does pose a little bit of a challenge to us but that will not detract us from our preparations. Instead of coming up with a game plan that will attempt to stop their strengths, we will be fully focused on making sure our machine is well-oiled and ready.
“We managed to identify key areas of our game that requires some improvements after we played two squad matches against Mthatha Bush Bucks that highlighted those things to us. The results may not have gone our way but overall I was very pleased with the manner in which we played. We gave a good account of ourselves,” coach Alfred Khunou told varsitysportssa.com.
With less than a week until Mthatha comes to life with Varsity Football action, Khunou admits he remains undecided about his final squad due to various reasons beyond his control, however, has given reassurance his team will be ready to make their mark on the tournament.
“There are certain things preventing me from making a final decision on my squad but that does not mean we will not be ready for our first match.
“The people of Mthatha will come out in their numbers to support us and we will make sure that they keep supporting us throughout the campaign by playing a brand of football they will enjoy.
“They deserve a team that will play entertaining football because they are passionate about the game. We are not only playing for the University but also for the entire area,” he added.
