UWC failed to make the most of a late chance to steal the win and had to settle for a goalless draw with Wits in Johannesburg on Monday.
There were chances aplenty throughout the encounter but neither side was able to control their final touch as the numerous chances fell by the wayside.
It was all Wits in the opening exchanges as the home side found their groove early in the encounter while the visitors struggled to find their footing.
UWC were being dominated in the midfield battle and remained on the back foot but some wayward shooting from Wits saw the home side fail to hit the target on numerous occasions.
Wits continued to dominate the possession stats as well as the midfield battle but failed to make the most of their dominance as the score remained deadlocked at the half-time break.
UWC grew in confidence in the opening second half exchanges and found their best chance of the match when Ayanda Nkukwana let rip with a snap shot from the top of the box but Wits stopper Brylon Petersen managed to comfortably deal with the powerful shot.
The match remained evenly poised with both sides looking dangerous and it would be the home side who brought out the best of Reon October in the UWC goal. The captain managed to produce the save of the match when he reacted quickly to keep a powerful shot from finding its way into the bottom left hand corner.
Wits kept the pressure on their opponents and once again found themselves with an ideal chance to break the deadlock but could not find the target.
Both sides had their chances to steal a late winner and the best of those fell to UWC’s Nhlanhla Manana who had a free header from the six-yard area but failed to find the target and saw his chance fly over the crossbar.
That miss proved to be costly as the final whistle sounded soon after and the sides were forced to settle for a solitary point each.
