After a disastrous campaign in their Varsity Football debut in 2013, Wits have a point to prove in this year’s competition.
If coach Karabo Mogudi’s words are anything to go by, Wits will make history in their second apperance in the competition. Mogudi insists that his charges will be smarter and aim for the top four as he has learned valuable lessons that he can use to his team’s advantage.
Despite opening their account with a dull goalless draw against the so-called underdogs UWC, Wits have improved their start compared to their opening game against NWU Mafikeng in 2013. They lost their first match 4-0 at home and this time around they managed to start the new season with a point.
Mogudi is banking on the side’s vociferous support as they host Madibaz in their second home match on Monday at Wits stadium at 6pm.
“Although we were not happy with a point against a team that we should have beaten at home we remain optimistic that we will get the valuable three points in our next mini league game.”
Even the presence of Wits PSL coach Gavin Hunt could not inspired his team to an opening day victory.
On paper they were expected to walk past the Mother City based visitors. UWC are seen as a charity case in the competitiion as they are bad travellers. But UWC put on a fight to take home a well-deserved point.
Mogudi is not prepared to lose any sleep over his side’s failure to take home all the points that we on offer.
“I know that the senior team’s coach Gavin Hunt was here to watch the boys and maybe the pressure took its toll on boys as well. Next time they will put on a better show than they did,”he said.
Whether Wits will rise to the occasion or not remains to be seen. UWC produced heroic piece of defending to claim an important point away from home.
