The hosts of the Varsity Basketball tournament, Wits University, continued their unbeaten run so far in the competition with a thrilling 81-50 win over the University of KwaZulu Natal at the Old Mutual Sports Hall.
Wits having beaten UCT last night in an exciting match-up, were in the mood against UKZN, who themselves were still in good spirits after their come back win yesterday against TUT. Last night’s results were put aside ahead of the clash, with Wits still enjoying the backing of its supporters in the crowd.
The game got underway with testing out each other’s defences from very early on, with UKZN looking particularly dangerous in the first few moments with Thabo Sithole looking elusive every time his side went forward. Wits also posed a threat with Angelo Quinn not afraid to take the shots at the basket, when he was afforded space. When the buzzer sounded for the end of the quarter, it was the Witsies who were 13-10 up.
The second quarter saw the gap grow between the two sides on the scoreboard and on the court, with Wits looking more clinical in bagging more of their attempts to see off the men from Durban 34-21 at the interval.
As the game continued, Wits grew from strength to strength, with the team combining very well to basket the rebounds. UKZN looked like they were growing frustrated as the clock ticked away and the Wits defenders ‘swating’ the ball in the air from the UKZN attackers. In the end Wits’ constant scoreboard pressure earn them a comfortable 81-50 victory and remain unbeaten in the tournament.
