Wits booked seventh place on the log in overall standings when they beat Wits 3-2 at the NWU Astro on Monday 13 May.
In the first match of the day, it was Nomnikelo Veto who was a standout for Wits. She had more than one shot blocked by goalkeeper Kerryn Frost, who again made very impressive saves to deny Wits any chance of get ahead, leaving the score at 0-0 after fifteen minutes of play. The second quarter was also quiet for both sides, making it an even playing field at the end of the first half.
Madibaz built momentum in the second half, with Kanyisa Gwata continuing to impress for her side. Lezaan Janse van Vuuren led from the front for Wits, as she tried her hardest to get her team on the board. It was Janse van Vuuren got who Wits’ breakthrough goal off a short corner five minutes before the end of the third quarter, forcing Madibaz to press harder if they stood any chance of coming back.
Wits continued to press in the final quarter and Ashleigh Datnow, who has been instrumental for Wits the whole weekend, made it 3-0 to the Johannesburg side when she scored a field goal. Caitlin Gouws replied immediately to put Madibaz back in it to narrow the lead to only 3-2 in favour of Wits. Gouws’ goal unlocked a new Madibaz side, who showed a sense of determination which they lacked in the first half. Unfortunately for Madibaz, they left it too late, handing Wits a 3-2 win and ending the tournament last on the log.
