Gift Baloyi stunned VUT in the 90th minute when his stunning volley sealed a 2-1 victory for Wits in a tense encounter.
This was the second consecutive fixture where Wits left it late to secure the victory and have now increased their chances of making the next phase of the competition.
The home side came out firing but brilliant defending by Wits saw them keep VUT scoreless in the opening 15 minutes.
Wits could have taken an unlikely lead soon after as they settled in the match but Gift Baloyi failed to trouble Eddie Kwalane in the VUT goal on two occasions.
It was end to end stuff for the remainder of the half as VUT continued to create chances but failed to find that final touch but it was Baloyi who proved more effective for Wits as he continued to trouble the VUT defence. Neither side could find the back of the net though as the match remained scoreless at half-time.
Both sides came out firing in the second half and had their chances to take the lead but a combination of poor finishing and good defending kept the sides scoreless.
The home crowd would be silenced in the 59th minute though as the VUT defence got themselves into all sorts of trouble at a Wits corner and allowed Aleksandar Kocic to scramble the ball home from close range.
The visitors pressed hard for a second goal as they created numerous chances but Thabiso Rafanyane failed to make the most of a few clear cut chances. VUT would make them pay for those misses in the 79th minute when Gomolemo Jiyane showed excellent strength to head home a corner to send the home crowd into ecstasy.
The drama continued in the dying minutes of the match as the home crowd were stunned thanks to a fantastic Baloyi volley that found the top corner and left Kwalane clutching at air in the 90th minute. The Johannesburg students dealt with a late VUT free-kick and hung on for the win.
