On Monday UCT conceded their worst loss of the tournament, this time at the hands of home team UFS Kovsies. The Free State team were ruthless in their attempts, and the final scoreboard read 89-13.
The home side built up an impressive 28-3 lead in the first quarter, and UCT had little reply towards their powerful attacking style of play. Despite concerted effort from the visitors to stage a comeback, Kovsies gave almost no leeway and had bagged a bonus point by half time, the score-line reading 54-7.
The second half saw the UCT team gain just six points, as the side struggled to keep up with the sheer physicality and power of the Kovsies team. And thus the final score remained 89-13, the visitors’ worst defeat of the tournament thus far.
After the game, UCT Goal Attack Trilby Brown spoke about one of the difficulties the team encountered in this week’s game.
“Being away from home was a difficult challenge as last week we had the support of our friends and family,” she said.
The side were far from naive and Brown claims that they went into the game knowing just how difficult it would be. Impressively, however, the girls never gave up, and kept fighting to get back into the game until the very end.
In terms of what the team did differently from their narrow defeat against TUT last week Brown said: “This week we pulled together as a team, and helped each other out when we needed to.”
And in terms of where they need to improve, she added: “I think we just need to keep up the fighting spirit we have had the entire tournament and just continue to do our best, working together as a team.”
UCT take on UP-Tuks next week, in their second home game of the tournament.
