Iyachesa has captured the hearts of South African students, as Varsity Football lights up their screens stadiums and campuses every season. But what does it mean? We asked the leaders of the eight participating universities to give us their take.
“It explains itself,” says TUT captain Elliot Seema. “There’s fire there, so I think for us, each week we are fired up to play as a team and to win. That’s why it’s called Iyachesa.”
“It means that you should play South African football, which is very nice and interesting,” said University of Limpopo captain Tshepo Motloutse. “It’s all about skill, speed and all these kind of things.”
