Varsity Beach Volleyball newcomers, VUT, will be looking to knock UWC off their perch when they travel to the Cape to take part in the 2015 edition of the event between April 22-23.
VUT’s Tsidi Dlamini stated the team were in the final stage of their preparation and hopes the weather will play its part to allow for an exciting tournament.
“We have prepared well and are really excited about playing in our first Varsity Beach Volleyball event. The nerves are definitely there because it is an unknown event and we don’t know what to expect.
“We did well at the USSA tournament, so we have some confidence heading into this event. I would say we are definitely the underdog team and hopefully things go our way so that we can beat UWC – seeing that they have beaten us three times in a row,” she told varsitysportssa.com.
The 23-year0old Safety Management student believes UWC are firm favourites, not only as they are the defending champions, but also because they have home ground advantage as they know the conditions very well.
“UWC are our biggest opponents because of what they have achieved before in the event. We have lost to them on three occasion, so we are looking to end that run of theirs. Obviously the event will be in their backyard, so everything is stacked in their favour.
“Hopefully, we get favourable conditions so that the playing fields are levelled out somewhat. In terms of weather, hopefully there will be no wind and rain because that is something we are not accustomed to. However, if it happens to be windy, we just need to remain focused and bring our A game to every match,” she added.
Dlamini stated she is looking forward to being part of the Varsity Sports brand as it provides the general public with an ideal platform to see what the sport of volleyball is all about as it provides both the players and the sport with exposure.
