Following a strong USSA campaign last year, VUT are confident that they will make a big impact in their debut season of Varsity Football.
Although they are complete newcomers to the competition, coach Gomma Masango says that his team will not take a backward step for anyone.
“We did well at USSA and beat Wits and we also beat Tuks last year, so we are not scared, we are going all the way to the final,” he said.
Masango, who is a former professional player himself, has followed Varsity Football closely in the first two years of the tournament and is excited about getting involved.
“The level of football is very high, there is passion from the supporters and it is run with a lot of professionalism, so we are looking forward to it,” he said.
The team from Veerenigeng will look to keep the ball on the ground and play carpet football this season, and Masango is confident that his team will be one of the frontrunners this season.
“We like to knock the ball around, and we can adapt if we need to, but we are ready and we can’t wait for it to start,” he said.
Masango says his goals for this season are to compete with the top teams in the competition and ensure that VUT show just how much talent there is in the Vaal.
