Vaal University of Technology head coach Mvula Tshabalala says he’s disappointed with where they find themselves with two games to go but rallied his troops to achieve the unthinkable against the champions University of Johannesburg and North-West University.
VUT find themselves in sixth place after five games but only three behind the league leaders UJ who they face next and are on a four-game unbeaten run. Tshabalala feels they’ve not got what they deserve so far and wants to prove a point on Thursday.
“I’m disappointed to see ourselves in this position left with two games because it’s a must-win in both games, I think we’re working hard with that one, with the technical team and the boys. More focus [is needed], we’ve been unlucky in the defeats, we dominated those games, we haven’t been able to score,” he said.
“We need to work hard on our finishing like we did last week and scored goals, it was so important [for our confidence].”
After the morale-boosting 3-1 win over Wits University, he’s aiming to take the confidence to UJ Stadium in Soweto, which has been somewhat of a fortress of late but he feels because it’s done or dies, his troops will be spurred on to keep their semi-final hopes alive.
“They know, we know as a team that it’s a must-win [game] like I have said we just need six points but we’re working hard on that. Our boys are ready for UJ, they know it’s a difficult game but I think we’ll give them a tough time because we need the game more than them,” he added.
“Yes we need support, I can touch on two things, we’re playing all our games away, I think that’s one of the things that affect our performance because the travelling, you can’t play all games away, it’s two games I think our boys are used to playing away.”
He also went on to call on for more support for the campus who’s shown immense progression over the last few seasons despite being limited in its budgets and facilities in comparison to its competitors.
“We need more support in all departments but I think our boys are switching on. I don’t want to lie, they are switched on, and they were aware of what this season was going to hold. But I can say in the coming Varsity Cup I believe we will be there again,” Tshabalala concluded.
VUT faces UJ at the UJ Stadium at 18:30 later today. You can get information on how to get tickets here.
