With two Varsity Athletics titles under his belt, UJ’s Long Jump sensation Zarck Visser has set his sights on peaking at the World Championships in Moscow later this year.
Visser blew the competition away in the first two Varsity Athletics meetings, jumping over eight metres consistently, and his next goal is taking his talent to the world stage.
Visser told varsitysportssa that jmuping in front of his home crowd in Johannesburg last week had been a special experience as the crowd got right behind him.
“I was in my element, jumping is what I enjoy most and I have not really competed much on my home track so it was great,” he said.
Visser has jumped further than anyone else in the world this year, but he is careful not to let that influence his performances as he aims at being as consistent as possible.
“I see myself as just another jumper and I am trying to do my best in every competition. I have got some good consistency at the moment which puts you at ease and gives me some confidence so now it is just about pushing it to the limit.
Visser’s next assignment will be the first IAAF World Challenge of the year in Tokyo next week, and once he gets back from that he will start training for the World Championships in August.
“Competing is fun but the hard work is done in training every day so I will work with my coach and try to make sure I am in top shape for that,” he explained.
