UP-Tuks coach Evangelos Vellios said that his team’s fighting spirit was the key to their comeback 2-1 victory over UCT.
The defending Varsity Football champions went a goal down on the Green Mile against a plucky Ikeys outfit, but kept their composure well to secure the three log points and their spot at the top of the standings.
Vellios is pleased with the results and performance of his team as they brought home yet another win.
“It was a gutsy performance and we had to dig deep in harsh conditions, I could not ask my players for more than what they gave me. We are very happy with the result as we achieved our primary objective when we got to Cape Town, which was the three points,” he said.
Vellios knew that UCT were not going to let UP-Tuks walk away with a victory especially not on their own home ground, but the coach had absolutely no doubt in his players even though he knew the weather conditions might have been against them.
“We knew they were going to put up a fight and they proved it when they scored but we knew as a team we needed a big performance to get the three points and we showed great spirit and character of sacrifice to go get the equalizer and finally the winner,” Vellios said.
Even though the team have walked away with two wins out of their two games thus far, they do not doubt the ability of the remaining opponents. Vellios and his players are very aware that every team is after the Cup and he knows none of them will want to watch the champions walk over them.
The defending champions will be out to maintain their winning streak when they face UJ.
