Varsity Sports was launched in style last week when Plettenberg Bay and Margate played host to official functions which marked the occasion.
Things kicked off on Wednesday when Tony Lubner welcomed Bitou Municipality Executive Mayor Memory Booysen, Varsity Sports CEO Francois Pienaar and Ian Hunter of the Local Organising Committee to the Upper Deck Centre in Plettenberg Bay.
That was followed up in Margate on Thursday when Juno Fourie introduced Pienaar, Boet Fourie of the Local Organising Committee and Hibiscus Coast Municipality Mayor, Councillor Cynthia Mqwebu to Gracelands Guest Lodge in Ramsgate.
With excitement mounting ahead of the first tournaments which will see the top University Beachvolleyball and Sevens rugby talents on show, the local communities of Plettenberg Bay and Margate are set to embrace the initiative which kicks off in Plett this weekend.
Pienaar introduced the concept of Varsity Sports, which offers an exciting platform for students and university teams to compete and for their campuses and supporters to get behind them, whilst also performing an important role in addressing the talent drain between secondary school and club sports and transforming grassroots sport across all sporting codes.
“This is an exciting new development for University sport in South Africa. We are confident that Varsity Sport will unearth a vast number of talented South African sport stars, officials and administrators in the near future.
“It has been proven that elevating the level of exposure of Varsity Sports holds huge benefits for South African sport in general. Many national and international stars will emerge from the Varsity Sports initiative,” he said.
