After hours of tireless behind the scenes preparation, the careful selection of each and every song and the precision of executing their performances for South Africa to witness, Varsity Sing’s 12 university choirs are ready for the big occasion.
Tonight, 14 July at 20:30, South Africa will enjoy a taste of what is to come over the next 13 weeks. Discover where the 13-week journey will take viewers, as kykNET shows South Africa which historic universities the competition will travel to, introduces the choir members and their choir directors, and chats to the judges of the competition.

After years of Varsity Sports focussing on the development of sports in South Africa, they will break new ground as the provide a platform for the talented students involved in arts and culture on campuses around the country.
“We began with sport and specifically rugby, with the Varsity Cup, then we began looking at other sports such as athletics, netball, football, hockey, sevens rugby and cricket,” said ASEM CEO, Francois Pienaar, ahead of the first episode. “And the natural progression was to also provide a platform for arts and culture, to see what cultural talent we have at our universities.”
Although choirs will compete for the Varsity Sing title, the competition is about much, much more than just that. CUT’s choir director, Tsotleho Patrick Motshabi, couldn’t have summed up the essence of Varsity Sing better, when speaking about his choir’s involvement in the competition.
“We don’t have any hopes of winning the competition,” said Motshabi. “We have hopes of touching peoples’ souls, uplifting emotions and changing people’s lives through music.”
Varsity Sing is a first of its kind university choral singing competition broadcast on TV. Don’t miss out as the scene is set for a thrilling first season of Varsity Sing.
The extended promo episode of Varsity Sing will be broadcast on 14 July, at 20:30 on kykNET, channel 144.
