South Africa’s Premier Hockey League has seen 151 current and former Varsity Hockey players (74 men and 77 women) take part in the country’s annual franchise competition.
The PHL forms a key part of the South African Hockey Association’s (SAHA) high performance pipeline which is aimed at better equipping South Africa’s national men’s and women’s teams for international competition.
Thanks to support from the Department of Sport & Recreation, the annual event consists of both a men’s and women’s competitions and runs over four weekends.
Each competition has six teams, with squads of 20. This means that more than 60% of the players have come through the Varsity Hockey ranks. That’s excluding five of the 12 coaches, who also coached Varsity Hockey teams.
It’s an exceptional achievement as Varsity Hockey aims to provide a platform to student athletes to both receive a tertiary education and pursue professional careers in sport.
