UFS Kovsies coach Godfrey Tenoff believes that Varsity Football will be ‘the best thing that has happened to South African football’.
Tenoff played professional football for ten years in the USA where he experienced the value of a strong university league first hand.
“As someone who played in the university leagues overseas I think that Varsity Football is monumental,” he told varsitysportssa.com.
Tenoff explained that by providing a platform for talented youngsters to showcase their skills on a national stage, Varsity Football will be filling an important gap in the development of the sport in South Africa.
“I think that this is the best thing that has happened in South African football. This can be considered a development phase for any footballer who is coming from high school and wants to go into the professional ranks.
“It is a great tool to entice players to continue playing the game and to show them that there is an academic and professional vision here,” he said.
The Kovsies boss said that by providing a stepping stone between high school and the professional ranks whilst requiring players to study further, Varsity Football has the potential to provide a major boost for the sport and the players coming through the system.
“It means that you can go to university and still play at a higher level and from there be spotted and go through to a professional team.
“I think that is what has been missing in South African football, I think it has been there for rugby, but for football it has been missing and now that avenue has been opened up by Varsity Sports,” added Tenoff.
