The sixth edition of Varsity Football much awaited kick off lived up to its expectations on the opening week. The hot action on the football pitch kept the fans warm and on the edge of their seats. What an opening week. This is indeed a competition full of surprises. UJ fired a warning shot with their biggest win in the history of the competition. UWC huffed and puffed to a home victory, while TUT claimed the Tshwane derby bragging rights. The action continues this week and it’s getting hard to pick a win from each match. Here are Round Two’s predictions.
UL 0 – 3 TUT
After they received a big hiding in Soweto, Limpopo will be hoping to bounce back in their most famous township of Turfloop. They couldn’t have asked for a better venue to redeem themselves than in Polokwane. This is their only home game, but the problem is that they come up against the tournament favourites TUT. The Tshwane-based outfit are going into the derby with their tails up after they stunned their arch rivals Tuks with a 2-1 victory in Hatfield. On paper TUT should win this one.
Wits 2 – 1 UWC
The boys from the Western Cape lived up to their tag of being bad travellers when they dropped all three points in Mafikeng. It’s getting tougher with each game as they again find themselves on the road. This time they are heading to Jozi where they will find Wits waiting for them. Expect another dismal performance from UWC. Wits got their campaign off to flying start when they surprised new comers UKZN in their own back yard. They are expected to pick up maximum points at Milpark in front of their home fans.
UJ 1 – 2 UP-Tuks
After a bad start to their tournament, the defending champions are left with no choice but to react from their Tshwane derby 2-1 defeat to TUT. It’s a tricky game for Tuks as UJ were on fire in their 7-1 drubbing of Limpopo. Defeat in Soweto where theirs is an electrifying atmosphere for UJ, will put Tuks in serious trouble. UJ are going into this game high on confidence and they know that a win will put them in a good position to advance to the knockout stages.
UKZN 1 – 1 NWU
UKZN blew an excellent opportunity to get off the mark when they crushed to a 2-1 defeat against Wits. They will welcome a tricky opponent in NWU. The North West based outfit are going into the match as the favourites to pick up the three points. UKZN have to bounce back and they will feel that this is the match that they can win. But NWU will have other ideas in their minds as back-to-back will put them in pole position to advance and set them up for that home semi-final that they have been looking for. They won’t qualify with a win but it will go a, long way towards helping them achieve their goal. We are in for a cracker of a match.
