The University of the Western Cape take on Wits University at UWC Sports Stadium, otherwise known as the Operation Room, for the opening game of the 2017 Varsity Football season. Matches between these two institutions always seem to produce fireworks.
Varsity Sports caught up with UWC’s head coach, Salie Adams, as they prepare for the game against Wits University.
UWC recently finished sixth at the recent USSA Championships, which were held in Johannesburg. “It was good platform for us (the USSA Championships) to gauge what we have,” said Adams, “as we want to do well in this year’s tournament.
“The preparations have been good but could have been better and the fact that some of our players are writing exams is not helping,” he added.
The University of The Western Cape finished sixth in the 2016 tournament and this year they aim to better that position. They have tasted success in the 2015 Varsity Football tournament, winning the competition, so the team knows what it takes to put together a title-winning campaign.
“We still have the core our team, which will assist us in achieving our goal. Players like Thulani Mkosi, who is our captain, and Agmat Ceres, an under-20 international, will have to come to the party with their experience.”
With the first game of the tournament against Wits looming the UWC boys are hyped up and raring to open their 2017 account with three points.

“This year’s team has a good bunch of first year students who have blended well within the team, as we witnessed at the recent USSA champs. The way forward now is to carry on from what we started there and continue this in our first game against Wits,” concluded Salie.
