With the knock-out stage of Varsity Football fast approaching there will be some crucial match-ups in Round Six on Monday.
The top two sides on the log – TUT and NMMU – are the only unbeaten teams left in the competition and they will square off in a massive clash in Tshwane which could decide which team finishes on top of the pile.
Further down the table UP-Tuks and NWU need just a draw from their last two games to secure a semifinal spot, and they will be hoping to do so sooner rather than later as they both have home advantage on Monday.
The only team that can sneak into the top four through the back door is UWC who need two wins and two consecutive defeats from either Tuks or NWU if they are to make the play-offs.
For the bottom three it will be a case of playing for pride as they seek to avoid the dreaded Wooden Spoon that awaits the bottom-placed team.
TUT v NMMU
(TUT Stadium, Tshwane – Kick-off: 16.30 live on Supersport Select 229)
Neither TUT or NMMU have tasted defeat in Varsity Football yet, so this match could well decide which team finishes the round robin phase of the competition on top of the table.
That would ensure home advantage for the play-offs, so although both teams have qualified for the semifinals already there is still plenty at stake in this encounter.
NMMU have shown that they have no fear of playing away from home, with four of their five matches on the road and five man of the match awards to show for their efforts.
However, they face a real test against a well-drilled TUT side who will be desperate to protect their spot at the top of the log in front of their home crowd.
Both of NMMU’s draws have come against top four opposition in UP-Tuks and NWU, so they will be keen to strike a psychological blow ahead of the knock-out phase of the competition.
Prediction: There is little to choose between these teams so we are backing them to remain unbeaten thanks to a hard-fought draw.
Teams:
TUT: 23 King Ndlovu, 3 Katlego Mokwena, 8 Kgotso Mohlomi, 5 Elliot Seema, 2 Themba Nkosi, 12 Khomotso Selemela, 4 Khuliso Rashamuse, 11 Sizwe Khumalo, 16 Selby Madibana, 15 Doctor Radebe, 9 Botshelo Mfulwane.
Reserves: 18 Solly Matlou, 10 Andrew Mashigo, 13 Oneth Mhangwana, 6 Sokanyile Masonwabe, 20 Sanele Sikhakhane, 7 Sonwabiso Busakwe, 19 Mbongeni Mpanza.
NMMU: 16 Lyndsay Jennings, 20 Lundi Balfour, 5 Cornelius Matuoane, 22 Niven Kops, 19 Lukhanyo Sompondo, 6 Kurt Duff, 11 Kieran Koert, 8 Lukhanyo Rasmeni, 10 Cloudius Sagandira, 7 Leroy van Rensburg, 13 Vuoyolwethu Marele.
Reserves: 1 Enver Vogel, 21 Zukisani Mtendeni, 3 Andile Mtyingizane, 12 Onela Beqezi, 17 Onneetse Leboifo, 25 Bradley Peterson, 23 Chuma Fobo.
Wits v UFS
(Millpark Stadium, Johannesburg – Kick-off: 19.00 live on Supersport Select 229)
Both Wits and UFS’ dreams of making the play-offs have gone, so they will be playing for the pride of their jersey as they look to bounce back from heavy defeats last week.
UFS were taken apart by a rampant Tuks side in front of their home crowd, who did not respond very well to the 4-0 drubbing, so the Bloemfontein side will feel that they have a point to prove in front of the Supersport cameras.
Wits managed to score their second goal of the competition in Port Elizabeth last week, but also conceded four so they will be intent on bouncing back at home.
Both teams will be keen to put some distance between themselves and bottom-placed UCT with a good win, so although they are out of the running this should still be an intense game.
UFS have shown some promising signs, such as the 1-1 draw with TUT earlier in the season, and they will be keen to show what they are capable of without the added pressure of their demanding fans.
Prediction: Both sides will be hurting after last week, but UFS have shown more potency on attack this season so we are backing them to upset Wits and win by a single goal.
Teams:
Wits: 1 Paulos Mohale, 4 Nelson Mwale, 5 Markus Lecki, 13 Tumelo Magethi, 3 Fulufhelani Munyai, 15 Manuel Makafane, 11 Neo Makua, 17 Bandile Mathandela, 6 Tebogo Digoamaje, 14 Sanele Njoko, 8 Phenyo Mongalo.
Reserves: 12 Joseph Mushi, 9 Phuti Leboho, 18 Innocent Magasela, 7 Keorpetse Molete, 10 Zachary Cohen, 24
Tshepo Motsukunyane, 25 Daniel Ferreira.
UFS: 1 Malefane Mokhachane, 2 Lehlohonolo Ramolebo, 3 Unathi Mabandla, 17 Jarred Meyer, 4 Thato Skaut, 20 Khotso Tjemolane, 6 Manxubandile Bantshi, 8 Ricco Sutil, 11 Simon Modupi, 10 Tshepo Sefatsa, 18 Ernest Mohloki.
Reserves: 16 Serasengoe Moodie, 15 Themba Zimo, 22 Christopher Makgoe, 13 Marothodi Phillies , 21 Elzandro Lewis, 5 Thuso Mpuang, 9 JJ Groenewald.
UP-Tuks v UWC
(Tuks Stadium, Tshwane – Kick-off: 19.00)
UP-Tuks are back at home after scoring nine goals and keeping two clean sheets in their last two games, so they will want to make the most of that momentum against UWC.
The Cape side need to win both of their remaining games if they have any hope of sneaking into the semifinals so they will be holding nothing back up in Pretoria.
For the visitors the equation is simple, anything less than a draw will see their play-off hopes go up in smoke, so expect them to come out firing.
The home side need just a draw to secure their play-off spot, but their sights will be set a little higher with a place in the top two securing home advantage in the knock-out stages.
Prediction: UWC will come out swinging, but Tuks are a side that has hit form at the right time and should win this one at home by two goals.
Teams:
UP-Tuks: 26 Tristyn Coetsee, 6 Kabelo Ramongane, 12 Kenneth Matlala, 9 Mbongeni Masilela, 5 Lawrence Ntswane, 3 Claudio Barreiro, 13 Sphelele Khuzwayo, 15 Jarryd van den Berg, 10 Moeketsi Modiba, 22 Dean Wilkinson, 4 Mosa Sesele.
Reserves: 23 John-Ross Kganane, 14 Keegan Boulle, 16 Sipho Masemola, 1 Nicholas Stothard, 11 Richard Moremi, 18 Nicholas Killas, 8 Nii-Ordartey Mills, 19 Charles Gulwako, 7 Luke Steyl.
UWC: 1 Basikelele Mdletye, 2 Vincent Sobekwa, 5 Cleo Pokpas, 4 Robbin Swartz, 23 Robin van Rensburg, 18 Lulama Lolwana, 8 Thando Ziwele, 14 Akhona Bonga, 20 Lungelo Nokele, 9 Curtley Buekes, 11 Oupa Sawukazi.
Reserves: 16 Mthobeli Lithiko, 10 Tapelo Sixishe, 7 Sinovuyo Ranana, 15 Unathi Segodi, 25 Reon October, 6 Siseko Lapi, 17 Mfundo Majola.
NWU v UCT
(Mafiking Sports Fields, Mafikeng – Kick-off: 19.00)
Bottom-placed UCT will have their work cut out for them when they travel north to face the dangerous NWU side in Mafikeng.
With just one log point and two goals to show for their efforts this season there will be few giving the Ikeys a chance of causing an upset against their more-fancied opponents.
This means that the visitors will be able to express themselves and play without any pressure as they look to drag themselves off the bottom of the table.
Despite going down to log-leaders TUT last week the Cape side showed plenty of heart and proved that they can scrap it with the best in the competition.
However, they will be up against a NWU side that feels they should be higher up the standings than their current third position.
The Mafikeng outfit have made it clear that no less than a full six points from their last two matches will be acceptable and they will be motivated to put on a goal-scoring spectacle for their loyal home fans.
Prediction: UCT will fight hard but they are not likely to be a match for the star-studded NWU side who should win by two goals.
Teams:
NWU: 91 Xolani Mtshali, 3 Kenneth Bodibe, 23 Tshenolo Machwisa, 21 Junior Leeuw, 5 Kyle Amon, 13 Zakhele Mashiyi, 24 Lebogang Phetlu, 17 Sandile Mbatha, 6 Luthando Ntokwenzani, 20 Sylvester Moses, 10 Thabo Mnyamane.
Reserves: 98 Tebogo Mosia, 7 Sipho Mateis, 45 Kagiso Modimoeng, 8 Shane April, 4 Xola Mlambo, 15 Matsobane Matsi, 92 Thatohatsi Santos.
UCT: 1 Bevan Adonis, 19 Anees Cozyn, 6 Byron Donaldson, 21 Jonathan Melamdowitz, 12 Velaphi Vilakazi, 20 Thami Mehlo, 25 Lwazi Maziya, 15 Dollie Mogomat, 7 Lukas Metzmacher, 10 Mcebisi Mtshali, 14 Wisy Namaseb.
Reserves: 3 Thabiso Mmotlana, 11 Mwansa Chalwe, 4 Shane Classen, 18 PJ Roberts, 17 Lerato Ngwenya, 22 Fransisco Paiva, 16 Thami Malusi.
