In round five of Varsity Football, the goals were once again flying in, making it another exciting four games for fans in the stands and front of the TV screens – these four players caught the attention of our team.
Ntokozo Mgidi (VUT)
This week, we can’t look past Ntokozo Mgidi. The striker of the Vaal University of Technology single-handedly beat the Educated Footballers from Wits University with a superb hat-trick – the first scored in this year’s Varsity Football tournament.
Mgidi was impressive on and off the ball and seemed to always be at the right place at the right time, which is what contributed to him scoring a treble. He’s a player to look out for in future.
Boy Rantsoti (UFS)
The University of the Free State striker scored his side’s only goal in a hard-fought 1-0 win at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
Besides the fact that he was the goal scorer, he looked dangerous throughout the game. Many expected Sello Diphoko to shine once more, but this time around Rantsoti stepped up.
Tshiamo Mokoena (UP-Tuks)
The Tuks captain matures each match week in his central midfield position and has helped Tuks to secure back-to-back-to-back wins after losing their first two games.
He played a crucial role in the Tuks’ defence and attack in the Tshwana derby against TUT. Tshiamo orchestrated the tempo of the game and excelled with important passes to his wingers to start some deadly attacks.
Thulani Zandamela (UJ)
Regulars of our weekly feature know his name by now as Thulani Zandamela keeps on stealing the headlines for the defending champions.
With three goals and two assists ‘Rasta’ has left his mark on the tournament, just like last year. His goal in the UJ’s 2-1 over the previous log leaders from the North-West University helped the Orange Army to beat the Noble Men for the first time.
Zandamela makes the Players that impressed for the third time and we expect to see his name even more going forward.
