Varsity Cricket alumni have been nominated in nine categories for the Cricket South Africa annual awards, including the SA Men’s Cricketer of the Year category.
Fast bowlers Lungi Ngidi (Tuks) and Anrich Nortje (Madibaz), are perhaps the most high-profile alumni up for awards based on their 2019-20 performances. The pair, who both played in the first two editions of Varsity Cricket in 2015-16 (both of which Ngidi’s Tuks won), will vie with wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock for the most prestigious award on offer on Saturday, July 4 2020 when a virtual ceremony will be because of Coronavirus restrictions.
As it happens, the duo are also on a long list of nominees for the SA Fans’ Cricketer of the Year. Nortje is also named as a possible winner for Delivery of the Year and Test Cricketer of the Year while Ngidi is further nominated for T20 International Cricketer of the Year, ODI Cricketer of the Year and KFC Streetwise Award.
Joining Ngidi in the ODI category (again alongside De Kock) is his Tuks captain from 2015, Heinrich Klaasen.
Considering Tuks’ success in Varsity Cricket, having won four of the five tournaments to date, it’s no surprise that they have further nominees too.
Erstwhile Northerns teammates Ruan de Swardt (2018-19) and Jacques Snyman (2015), who both won Varsity Cricket during their time at Tuks, are up for the CSA Provincial One-day Cricketer of the Year award. Basheer Walters (Eastern Province) and Codi Yusuf (Gauteng) will hope to deny the pair.

Finally, the One-Day Cup Cricketer of the Season category sees both Zubayr Hamza (UWC 2016-17) and Grant Roelofsen (UJ 2015-17) nominated, against Mbulelo Budaza and Proteas spinner Keshav Maharaj.
The gala event to honour South Africa’s top performing professional cricketers over the past year will take place on Saturday, July 4 2020, in a virtual ceremony because of the restrictions imposed by the Covid-19..
