In December 2015, sevens rugby captured the hearts of not only rugby enthusiasts, but thousands and thousands of Capetonians and South Africans, over the two-day World Sevens event at Cape Town Stadium.
The stadium was packed to the rafters with fans dressed up in everything from mankinis to superhero costumes. An entirely new audience had their eyes opened to the world of rugby sevens rules, and just how exciting the 14 minutes of action can be.
If you thought that sevens couldn’t possibly get any more exciting, think again. Varsity Sports is always pushing the envelope of sports innovation and entertainment. From nine-point tries in 15-man rugby, to 10-run targets in T20 cricket – they are adding new dimensions to every sport.
Adding to the thrill of Varsity 7s, this year teams will be allowed to call a Power Play minute. Any try scored by the team during that minute will be doubled from five points to 10.
So expect matches to go down to the wire, even when teams trail by 10 points. Look forward to epic comebacks and 10-pointers. In 2016 the fat lady won’t be singing until the final whistle – no matter how far ahead a team might be.
Get down to Villager FC from 30 April to the 2 May to witness the Power Play in action and enjoy a three-day sevens party!
Tickets will be available from Monday 25 April on the Varsity Sports app at R10 a ticket and the first 500 to purchase tickets will receive a free beer or soft drink.
