Everybody enjoys a classy celebration. From the Bafana Bafana team celebration at the corner flag following Siphiwe Tshalabala’s 2010 World Cup opening goal, to Breyton Paulse’s iconic backflip, and most recently the silky moves of Springbok Trevor Nyakane.
On Friday evening, 29 April, Varsity Sports announced at their official welcome dinner in Cape Town, that in 2016, Varsity 7s teams will be rewarded with more than just five points for tries scored over the Varsity 7s weekend at Villager Rugby Club.
Every day, SuperSport will put together a selection of the best try celebrations of the day. At the end of each of the three days, the winning team celebration will receive five cases of beer and 20 Steers burgers, which they can collect at the end of the tournament.
An overall best celebration of the tournament will be selected on the final day.
The rules are simple:
– The celebration may be no longer than 5-7 seconds
– No messaging under the playing jersey or shorts will be allowed
– Nothing derogatory, offensive or politically affiliated will be allowed
– No nudity will be allowed
– The celebration must involve two or more players
So look forward to entertaining celebrations, as teams join in on the sevens party atmosphere, revelling in their well-worked tries.
It’s been an entertaining year of celebrations in world sport, as The Dab was seen everywhere from the USA’s NBA to the English Premier League, while the West Indies gave the world their “Champions” dance in the T20 Cricket World Cup final.
Who knows, world sports’ next trademark celebration could be born at Villager Rugby Club this weekend. Regardless, we’re in for a party and for a few moments between tries, seven men on the pitch will join in on the fun.
Varsity 7s takes place from Saturday 30 April to Monday 2 May.
Tickets are available on the Varsity Sports app at R10 a ticket.
