UWC showed no mercy to UKZN while handing them a 10-2 thrashing on the second morning of the ongoing Varsity Women’s Football tournament in Potchefstroom.
That a big scoreline was in the offing was evident from almost the first whistle, UWC mounted an attack and Nolubabalo Sishuba duly opened the scoring.
Their potential brittleness of the UKZN defence became evident when in quick succession Mbaliyethu Mhlongo doubled UWC’s lead, Lungelo Ndlovu turned the ball into her own net for the third and Babalwa Mngxunya scored her second of the tournament to make the score 4-0 before 10 minutes were up.
UKZN found a lifeline just before the first half water break when their captain and star player Kholosa Biyana netted to make the score 4-1 in UWC’s favour.
Not long after, however, Mhlongo added her second of the match and it was 5-1.
Nonetheless, UKZN had the final say of the first half as their other key player, Sphokazi Ngeleka, scored their second.
It proved tho be their final consolation as UWC continued their free-scoring in the second half, but also kept things tighter in defence.
Mhlongo completed her hat-trick, Janice Smith scored two and the final two goals came from vice-captain Puleng Moremi and Tshegofatso Senanya – both of whom came on as substitutes.
By the time the final whistle went at Fanie du Toit Sports Ground, the score read 10-2 to put UWC back on course for another Varsity Women’s Football semi-final and possible final.
