UWC put in a dominant display as they beat WSU 3-1 in Bellville on Thursday to rise to the top of the Varsity Football standings after three rounds.
The Cape side were helped by an own goal by WSU goalkeeper Thando Sotyato before Nhlanhla Manana and Thulani Mkosi got a goal each to give their team a second home win in a row.
It was promising start by both teams in the opening five minutes as they showed their intention to try and break each other down early on.
It was WSU who had the first shot on target before the ten minute mark, but it never troubled the UWC goalkeeper Reon October. It was then the turn of UWC to get their first shot a few minutes later with Marshall Jansen unable to find a way past the WSU keeper from a free kick.
It was in the 16th minute when the home side got a breakthrough thanks to the efforts of Sotyato. Sotyato managed to knock the ball into his own net from a corner in what seemed like mix up between himself and his defenders.
UWC became more confident after that goal and they continued to add pressure on Sotyato with a barrage of crosses and high balls. After another great attack Keenan Davis nearly added a second with a fine shot.
With just over six minutes left in the half, UWC doubled their lead after Manana was put into space to slide a shot past the WSU keeper. This was after WSU nearly found an equaliser at the other end of the park.
WSU looked for an early opening in the second half, but struggled with their final pass in the UWC half. They were however causing UWC some trouble with Jansen picking up a yellow card trying to thwart an attack.
With the away side going in search of a goal, UWC found plenty of space on the counter and looked more likely to add another goal. Marchello Viglino had great chance to do so, but he fluffed his shot wide of the goal in the 63rd minute.
Six minutes later they would eventually get that third after some great work by Chad Smith to find Mkosi in space in the WSU box, with the midfielder easing his shot past the keeper.
WSU did get a goal back with less than 15 minutes to play after Siphesande Matoni’s cross managed to find his its way past October.
Jansen was then sent off after getting a second yellow, but the game was already won as UWC were just too good on the day.
