Cape Town’s UWC set up a semi-final clash against their Western Cape rivals, UCT, with a 2-0 win against UJ on Friday night at Fanie du Toit Sports Grounds.
The University of the Western Cape haven’t looked vulnerable at all in the round robin phase of the competition and their final match against UJ was no different.
It took UWC just 11 minutes to find the back of the net, when a thunderous Chamelle Witshire strike flew past Yvonne Miya.
As we’ve become accustomed to, UWC’s defenders Drishana Pillay, Nicole October and Witshire were a brick wall at the back.
Just when UJ looked as though they were finding a way into the match, Abongile Dlani sunk UJ hearts when she laced one on the volley, whizzing the ball past a helpless Miya five minutes before the break. UFS had few if any opportunities in the first half.
UJ pushed hard in the second half and had the bulk share of the possession, but a structured UWC was happy to sit back and contain the UJ attacks. UJ strikers rarely making their way into the box and resorting to long range efforts.
UJ’s best opportunity fell to the feet of Thato Letsoso, who snapped one just wide of Peters’ goal. The match ended 2-0 as UWC go through to the semi-finals undefeated.
