Following two draws in their opening two games, Varsity Football champions UWC will take on rookies CUT at UWC Sports Stadium on Monday 1 August in search of their first win of their campaign.
The Bellville-based side is currently fifth on the log standings with two points – two points below their opponents from Bloemfontein, who are in third position. After 1-1 and 0-0 draws against UP-Tuks and Wits, respectively, UWC go into the CUT game knowing they need to start collecting maximum points if they are to finish fourth and secure a semi-final berth.
Having guided UWC to their first Varsity Football triumph last season, coach Salie Adams knows that it is something his current crop of players are capable of.
“It’s not unattainable and it’s not impossible,” he says. “But it’s going to take a lot of team effort, a lot of individual brilliance, a lot of less mistakes individually and hopefully the units and the team can step up to the plate. For sports people to be successful you need to be calm.”
Adams has made two changes to the team that played 0-0 away to Wits on Monday. Captain Akhona Bonga returns to lead his team after he was left out, in order to attend a family matter. He will take the place of Ryan Steer who will sit on the bench, while Giovani Gaffoor will come on for the injured Ayanda Nkunkwana.
The match kicks off at 18:30 at UWC Stadium on Monday.
