After a stuttering start to their Varsity Football Challenge campaign, UWC has vowed to up the ante and go all out when they meet the TUT in their next home game on Monday.
The USSA Western Cape champions suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of the NMMU at UWC Stadium in their opening encounter last Monday. The game went into the break scoreless, but two goals by Niven Kops and Leroy van Rensburg in the second half ensured that the visitors collected the maximum three points on that chilly evening.
UWC captain Basikelele Mdletye believes that the loss is now water under the bridge, and that it will be a whole new ball game come Monday.
“We were in control of the game [against NMUU] in the first half, but lost concentration in the second stanza and conceded two silly goals,” the towering goalkeeper recalls.
Mdletye says they have corrected those mistakes in training this week, and his team will focus on their strong points of dishing out carpet football.
TUT have proved to be a force to be reckoned with in this inaugural Varsity Football Challenge. They produced the biggest shock of the tournament thus far when they downed USSA national champions Tuks 4-1 in their opening match.
By all measures, the next game will not be a walk in the park for the Bellville-based UWC, and the team will be stretched to the limit.
