A few days ago UWC’s hopes of a home semi-final were dashed by a loss to UP-Tuks in the last round matches. Tuks outsmarted UWC with a 2-1 win on Monday to secure a home semi-final spot against the same opponents. It has been a tough week for UWC who could not secure a home semi-final, but the boys from Western Cape will want to make amends for the Monday disappointment by defeating Tuks and in so doing, book themselves a spot in the final.
Ryan Steer has had an outstanding tournament, even standing in as a captain in Thulani Mkosi’s absence. Varsity Sports caught up with Steer who is a Sports Science student at UWC. The loss to Tuks seems to be a thing of the past for UWC and their main focus is tonight’s game.
“It has been an honour to lead the boys in the absence of our captain. Our team has many leaders, who lead in their own way and my job was just to motivate the guys and play well.”
The loss to Tuks was UWC’s third this season and was a bitter pill to swallow as the loss meant that they couldn’t secure a home semi-final at the Operation Room.
“There are no words to describe the mood in the camp for tonight’s games. It’s either we go big or we go home. We’re going to fight and go through to the final and do it for our university,” added Steer.
The 22-year-old Steer has one goal to his name and will be hoping his troops will be able to bounce back with a bang and make it to another final. UWC will pin their hopes on their marksman Phiwokuhle Mpalala who has netted six goals this season.
The game takes place at Tuks Stadium at 16h00 and will be broadcasted on SuperSport 4.
