Round one of the 2017 Varsity Football tournament dished out some quality football and UWC were the biggest winners after hammering Wits 6-0 in Bellville.
Next up for UWC is a trip to CUT who also managed to get a win at home by beating UJ 1-0. UWC currently sit on top of the log with CUT occupying position three on the standings, both teams have same number of points with UWC having a superior goal difference. When these two teams meet it’s always a cracker of a game and fans can expect fireworks at CUT Stadium on Thursday
Varsity Sports caught up with UWC captain Thulani Mkosi as he shared his thoughts about the win against Wits and the upcoming game against CUT.
“Getting a win in the opening game was great which helps to boost the confidence of the team going forward,” said Mkosi.
UWC has never scored more than three goals in a game, in Varsity Football history. The captain was also on the score sheet.
“At the recent USSA championships we played against Wits and we beat them, coming to the Varsity Football match against them we knew what to expect from them. We put six goals past them which could have been more but that’s gone now – we turn our focus to the next game which is CUT,” added Mkosi.
Mkosi and his boys next travel to Bloemfontein to take on CUT. Both teams are on three points going to round two.
“The CUT game is going to be a very tight game as both teams play an attacking brand of soccer, but whoever wants it more will be victorious. It was great finding the back of the net and hopefully I will score more,” concluded Mkosi
