UWC backed up their upset win over UP-Tuks by crushing Cape rivals UCT-Ikeys by six wickets at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom.
UWC never looked in trouble throughout the game, with their bowlers laying the platform for victory to record their second win in Varsity Cricket.
The Ikeys batted first and got their innings off to a blistering start, going at 10 runs per over to post 75 runs after just seven overs, thanks to Jack Newby, who got his half-century off just 25 balls.
At the end of the 12th over Ikeys were sitting at 109/0, with Newby on 77, when in stepped UWC’s Jason Smith. Smith dismissed Newby, Brandon Tattam and Alex Whitelaw in the next over, halting UCT’s momentum.
Ikeys then went into a slump losing another three wickets in the next five overs and after the 18th, were sitting on 138/6.
They could only add another 11 runs to their total, as they were eventually all out for 149. Reeve Cyster, with impressive bowling, claimed two wickets in the final over and ended on figures of 3/19 in 3.5 overs.
UWC started their innings in the same fashion as the Ikeys, with George Banda and Ashley Cupido posting a total of 49/0 after five overs. The opening pair were ruthless in their batting with the Ikey’s unable to find an answer.
With 10 overs still to go, UWC only needed another 38 runs to win and were scoring at a run rate of nearly 11, with all their wickets remaining.
Ikeys’ captain Sebastian Golding finally got the breakthrough in the 11th over when he caught and bowled Cupido on 32, and in the very next over, Stuart Cox got Banda out on 71. UWC were to lose two wickets soon, thanks to Golding again and Jordan Leppan dismissing Smith and Imraan Hendricks respectively.
Despite the losses, UWC cruised to a comprehensive victory with Lesiba Ngoepe getting the winning runs with a four with 31 balls remaining.
