The business end of the 2017 edition of Varsity Beach Volleyball got under way in perfect conditions at the Kings Park Sports Complex, Durban. Cloudy and overcast yet cool conditions greeted the hordes of spectators and the players.
In the first semi-final, UJ were looking to redeem themselves after being beaten by UWC in the round robin stages the previous day. UJ’s Laqeeah Sujee, captain, said this time around that they were ready for UWC.
Sujee and Ngwabi stepped up their game and it was a tit-for-tat affair right until the half time whistle with the scores tied at 19-19. That score then became 30 -30 with two minutes remaining. But Sujee and Ngwabi dug deep to hold on gamely for a memorable win and advance through to the finals by knocking out the defending champions. What a great start. Sujee’s confidence at the start certainly paid off.
Full time score: UJ 36 UWC 33
