UJ notched their first Varsity Hockey win when they saw off spirited Johannesburg rivals Wits 2-1 in Potchefstroom on Sunday.
UJ had coasted to a comfortable 5-0 win earlier in the week when the two teams met in preparation for Varsity Hockey, but Wits provided a much sterner test on Sunday, pushing their opponents all the way.
Goals from Nika Nel and SA star Bernadette Coston saw UJ take an early 2-0 lead, but Wits fought back well and manged to get a goal back through Demi du Toit.
Despite Wits’ spirited fight back UJ held on to notch the victory to bounce back from their opening loss to UP-Tuks and gain valuable confidence for their clash with hosts Pukke on Monday.
Wits next face NMMU as they search for the first victory following a draw with UCT and the loss to UJ.
