The University of Johannesburg have bagged a spirit-lifting win, as they won 53-23 against the Vaal University of Technology in the final fixture of the 2018 Varsity Netball season on Monday evening at the UJ Sports Hall, Soweto, Johannesburg.
The match kicked off smoothly as UJ managed to take control early on and secure a few turnovers to take the lead within the first five minutes of the game. As the match progressed, UJ and VUT found their offensive feet to end the first quarter at 8-5 to UJ.
Each side brought their heads and hearts back into the second quarter as VUT caught up quickly to UJ’s lead but lost their steam to see UJ have a six-point lead halfway through the section. The onslaught continued as UJ doubled the score to 20-10 in the tenth minute, which then saw a power play called. Both teams failed to utilise the ever-crucial advantage, ending the score at 22-11 into the half time break.
A pep talk for the UJ team did wonders as the girls brought their A-game to widen the gap, increasing their lead to take possession of the game and secure another 11 points, meanwhile VUT struggled behind, scoring only five points in the third quarter to make it 33-16.
A fight for the seventh place position ensued as the second and final power play was called. UJ earned an impressive six points, while VUT fluttered and had their opportunity slip through their fingers. The boost catapulted UJ to gain a far advance while VUT fell further down the score board. With only four minutes left on the clock, UJ were solely focused on maintaining their ground and met their goal of surpassing 50 points. Despite a tough bout, VUT were unable to catch up, finishing the match at 53-23.
UJ finish seventh place with seven points, while VUT remains at the bottom of the log with 0 points.
