UJ beat Kovsies on Thursday morning convincingly, by 88 runs, in Potchefstroom on Thursday morning.
The Joburg boys won the toss and elected to bat, on a warm Potchefstroom morning. They got off a solid start when Delano Potgieter scored a solid 55 off 45 balls. His innings included a 10, when he hit the giant Samsung phone on the boundary. For this shot his team received 10 runs – the first of the tournament.
Potgieters’ innings lay the foundation for Grant Roelofsen (32*) and Justin Wilson (28*), who tore the Kovsies bowlers apart later on.
But Kovsies were also their own worst enemy. Their opening bowler Dylan McKenzie bowled five wide balls in his first over, something that is very costly at this level.
But credit must go to the lads from Johannesburg, they had their eyes set on victory, and achieved this. After they lost to Maties on Wednesday, their were in danger of missing out on a place in the play-offs on Saturday.
UJ got to 184/5 in their 20 overs. Kovsies got off to a mediocre start by scoring only 33 in the first five overs. Stephen van Vollenhoven (25) was caught in the gully by Ryan Rickelton off the bowling of Jayden Broodryk.
Wihan Victor also contributed 25 runs before he was trapped LBW by Broodryk. After the departure of these two the Kovsies innings slowly fell apart. They only mustered 111/9 in their 20 overs.
