UJ and Maties both made a big statement of the opening day of the Varsity Hockey tournament at Wits with big wins.
USSA champions UJ blew Rhodes away 7-1, whilst Maties handed Wits a 5-1 defeat in the last two matches on Saturday.
UJ simply had too much class for Rhodes, taking the lead in the fifth minute and punishing the Grahamstown side with a clinical performance.
Rhodes fought hard, but by the time they scored their first goal UJ already had four, and they kicked on to score tthree more which sealed a dominant victory.
In the last game of the day Wits were first to score, but Maties responded with five unanswered goals to cruise to victory.
Maties equalised just before the end of the first chukka, and went on to score four more goals with Jordan Turnbull named the Samsung Super Striker and the FNB man of the match.
