The University of Johannesburg took on the University of Cape Town in the final round of Varsity Netball in Pretoria. It was the University of Johannesburg who were eager to impress, and did just that as they dominated the opening quarter of the match, surging ahead with a 20-8 lead in the first quarter.
Both teams began to open up more as they created more scoring opportunities in the second quarter. With the assist of a power play, the Johannesburg team were able to capitalise on their opportunities and led the Cape team 36-22 going into the second half.
It was a cautious start to the second half by UCT as they enforced a couple of changes to their team. It was a spirited performance by coach Sue Schooling’s ladies, who showed fight. However, an enterprising power play by their opponents saw them fall further behind. The University of Johannesburg outscoring their opponents in the final power play, called in the third quarter, as they had a daunting 58 to UCT’s 33 in the third quarter.
A UJ team bursting with firepower proved to be a bit too much for a determined UCT side as Karabo Mokoena came in for the UJ defence. Both sides played a reserved final quarter. An energetic effort from the University of Johannesburg’s Angelique Molefe saw her earn the FNB Player of the Match award.
UJ ended their season in sixth place, with UCT in seventh.
