The University of Johannesburg will be looking to extend their unbeaten streak as they take aim at familiar foes UP-Tuks in Soweto on Monday 1 August in their Varsity Football encounter.
Round Three of Varsity Football sees the ‘Orange Army’ taking on UP-Tuks in what is a repeat of the 2014 final, which was the last time the teams met. Things have changed since then, and the sides have had contrasting fortunes this season. UJ are unbeaten so far, but their lack of clinical finishing and playing within themselves cost them two points as they drew 0-0 in their previous home game against CUT.
UP-Tuks on the other hand, are yet to win a game this season, and will be looking at UJ to get their season up and running. “TUKS are always a tough opponent, they may have lost their home tie against rivals TUT, but we won’t take them for granted, and we will aim to get maximum points on Monday,” said UJ coach Mandla Zwane.
Tuks have only managed to score a single goal in the competition thus far, and their opponents will know that Tuks are no walkovers. They are the two-time champions after all.
“Tuks are always a tough team to play, we will have to put our home draw behind us, and focus on the next objective, which is to beat the team from Pretoria,” said captain Ruwell Jagger.
The match will take place on Monday 1 August, at the Soweto Staduim, the same stadium where UJ lost the 2014 Varsity Football final. Will history repeat itself? Or will UJ put the demons of 2014 behind them and beat UP-Tuks in their own backyard. You can watch the match unfold, as it will be televised on SuperSport, with kick-off at 16:30.
