Born in the Mother City, standing at an intimidating 1.9m one would think he should have been a rugby player. But from a young age Zondani Bathandwa knew he wanted to be a football star.
His sporting career began in East London, Mdantsane, where Bathandwa, known as “Gold”, was always set to be a star in the making. He fought tooth and nail to get to where he is, and at the same time not forgetting his academic work.
At a tender age of 25-years-old; “Gold” has a career that most upcoming stars can only dream of. He is not the biggest of players, but he stands his ground in the centre back or right back position. His sporting career has led him to this point as a Varsity Football player, but that wasn’t his first great achievement.
Bathandwa played for Blackburn Rovers FC, Swartkops Valley Brothers FC, Moonlight United Brothers FC, FB Madrid FC & Walter Sisulu University.
He was Player of the Tournament in 2011 & 2012 during USSA qualifiers, and he was the top goal scorer in 2016 ABC Motsepe playoffs.
“I have a lot that I am yet to achieve,” said Bathandwa. “Football has been a part of me just as much as my heart is a part of me, but I know playing days are numbered. Hence the academic route I have taken, so that even if I don’t play I should be able to share my experience and my skills with the younger guys,. Football is truly a beautiful game.”
The Bachelor of Public Administration student has a bright future ahead no matter which path he chooses, but we hope to see him with a professional contract in the near future.
