With the season coming to an end, it was all too little too late for the men from Alice. After what was a shocking start to the season, the University of Fort Hare struggled to find stable ground to re-group and plan their revival in the 2017 Varsity Football season, which never really kicked off for them.
“It has been a long road, we had planned for a better season, but I guess other teams were just more eager to win than we were,” said a still upbeat captain Siphamandla Zanekile. “It’s just a pity that the scoreboard is not an entirely true reflection of our sacrifices and our efforts. But I must say that we have grown and there have been many lessons learnt. We will be back!”
This year season was a rather dry one for UFH. It was a long and hard-fought season, with seven losses from seven games and just two goals in campaign. One can say it started coming together too late for the University of Fort Hare. The team will not be participating in next year’s season, so it provides some much needed time to rebuild the team and come back with a bang.
“Thank you to the players that stayed with us during hard times when we knew we were more than what the scoreboard said, and also had courage in the face of adversity,” said head coach Charles Hanyani. “We win some we lose some, this season was a building phase, we will be back, and a lot stronger. To the rest of teams good luck with the semi-finals.”
As the University of bow out of the tournament and until their return, this is the end of the road for the men from Alice with a season that did not go according to the plan.
