After fighting their way to a valuable draw in Bloemfontein on Monday, UCT are aiming to go to the next level in front of their home fans.
The Cape side showed good character to battle their way back from a goal down against a strong UFS team in their opening Varsity Football fixture, and they now have their sights set on earning their first win when they host NMMU at the Green Mile next week.
After a goalless first half in Bloemfontein both teams came out with more to play for in the second half.
UFS were given an opportunity to take the lead when they were awarded a penalty for a hand-ball and Unathi Mabandla duly gave them a 1-0 lead.
However, with 10 minutes or so left UCT’s Wisy Namaseb received a perfect through ball which he calmly and accurately chipped over keeper Mokhachane’s head. Both teams walk away with a point each leaving them tied in fourth position on the log after one game.
UCT’s left winger Lukas Metzmacher said it was ‘a real honour’ to play for his university in the inaugural Varsity Football competition.
Metzmacher explained that it is going to be a challenge to beat NMMU in their upcoming game.
“We’re definitely going to be have to improve on Monday’s performance in order to win our next match, but there is no doubt that we can do it. We’ve been training hard and we have the talent,” he said.
Hopefully their upcoming match being played in front of a home crowd will boost UCT’s spirits.
In round two UFS will take on log-leaders NWU at 7pm in a game will be broadcast live on Supersport 4.
UCT will play their first home fixture against Port Elizabeth’s Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Univeristy (NMMU), a team in high spirits after beating UCT’s fellow Capetonians UWC.
