The UCT Beach Volleyball team are hoping that their knowledge of the conditions in Camps Bay will give them an edge over the competition this year.
They have been playing regularly in Camps Bay as part of their training programme in the build-up to Varsity Beach Volleyball which starts on November 29, and their coach Leo Williams is hopeful that this will give them an advantage.
“We have been training three times a week for about four months now and they are very familiar with the conditions in Camps Bay. The wind can play a role there so knowing the conditions will be vital,” he told varsitysportssa.com.
Williams has retained all three players that took part in the inaugural competition last year, adding one more to make the squad of four, and that continuity has already paid off.
“I have definitely already seen some progress, they are moving much better and they are much stronger after I put them on a specific gym programme,” he explained.
Williams has taken a long-term view with the UCT side as he looks to mould them into a team capable of challenging for the Varsity Beach Volleyball title.
“It is a three-year plan that we have in place to build them up and get them to a level where they can compete with the top sides. We are playing another little tournament in Camps Bay this weekend so they will be ready to give a good account of themselves at the end of the month,” he said.
Williams said that as Camps Bay is ‘home turf’ for his side they are expecting plenty of support as they look to improve on their performances in Plettenberg Bay and Margate last year.
