TUT put to bed their opening night jitters to breeze past CUT, 5-0, in their Varsity Women’s Football Round 2 clash on Friday morning.
Nomhle Sangweni got the ball rolling for TUT when she buried the opener in the first minute to leave CUT shocked. By ten minutes in she had made it 2-0 with her second and the Free Staters were left huffing and puffing in the Potchefstroom heat.
Nonetheless, CUT found some resolve and determinedly kept the five-time defending champions at bay until the referee blew the half-time whistle on Fanie du Toit A.
That said, within two minutes of the restart they had conceded a penalty and Gabonnelwe Kekana duly buried the spot-kick with her left foot to put TUT 3-0 up.
That became 4-0 after 52 minutes when TUT captain Hildah Magaia scored her second in two matches, and now the pressure was on CUT to not capitulate.
In truth, despite Lesego Mashifane scoring a fifth just after the hour mark, CUT didn’t lose their fight and TUT had to earn the 5-0 win.
With it, the Red Machine move to four points and two behind UFS who they face in a Group B decider on Friday afternoon.
